Give Your Nuts The Once Over

Give Your Nuts The Once Over

We’re not talking about the nuts and bolts that hold your world together. Nah, we're getting a bit more personal and chatting about the nuts that hang a bit lower—your testicles, to be precise. Why? Because its testicular cancer is the #1 type of cancer in young blokes like many of us. The good news? It's also one of the most beatable forms of the big C, especially when you catch it early. Let's get down to brass tacks and talk about giving your family jewels the once-over.

Testicular cancer is most common in guys aged 15-44.

It's got one of the best cure rates out there, with over 95% of early catches being curable. In other words, if you’re on time you’re about as likely to kick the bucket as the West Tigers have of making the finals. Symptoms might include a lump or swelling in one of the testicles, a heavy feeling in your scrotum, or general discomfort around your big old bag.

How to Check Your Hardware

Warm Up the Engine: Best to do the check after a hot shower when the scrotum is relaxed.

Grab a Hold: Gently roll each testicle between your thumb and fingers. It's not a strength test; think of it as checking if your avo is ripe without turning it to mush.

Know Your Nuts: Get familiar with what's normal for you. Each bloke's berries are unique, like snowflakes, just a lot less cold and more ball sack like.

Lookout for Lumps: You're feeling for any lumps, bumps, or changes in size and shape.

If you do find something, you just need to book a regular doctors appointment with you local GP, and there’s plenty of bulk billing ones around so it won’t cost you a thing. They’ll give ask you a few questions, perform a brief exam, and if they think there’s anything to worry about they’ll refer you towards the next steps. Often they’ll want to do an ultrasound or blood test to make sure it’s not a false alarm, and then they can either send you home or towards the right specialist to get your fighting fit again.

In all seriousness, checking your pears regularly could save your life. It's a few moments once a month that could make all the difference. And let's face it, we've spent a fair bit of time looking after that area in other ways throughout our lives..

Crack a Joke, Save a Mate

Sharing a laugh about checking your nuts can actually make a difference. It breaks the ice and makes it less awkward to talk about something that's genuinely important. The next time you're handing your mate a beer, ask him how his nuts feel… if he looks at you funny blame it on us.

In the spirit of keeping things light while spreading a serious message, remember losing a nut is better than losing your life. Enjoy Testicular Cancer Awareness Month and look after yourself!
